HUNTER'S POINT SOUTH WATERFRONT PARK WINS 2014 ASLA HONOR AWARD

The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) has awarded Hunter's Point South Waterfront Park a 2014 Honor Award, recognizing the new waterfront landscape as an outstanding achievement of design. As a new model for urban ecology, the park is a design collaboration between Thomas Balsley Associates and WEISS/MANFREDI with ARUP as the prime consultant. It is the first phase of a larger master plan that will transform 29 acres of post-industrial waterfront on the East River and includes New York City's largest affordable housing initiative since the 1970s. The park's resiliency was tested in 2012 when, still under construction, it survived Hurricane Sandy without any major damage. The park offers diverse active and passive recreational spaces and includes a pleated metal pavilion that collects rain water, solar energy, and frames spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline.
