Converging Territories: Island Incubator Published by YSOA

A new book, Converging Territories: Island Incubator, was recently published by the Yale University School of Architecture. As an extension of Michael A. Manfredi and Marion Weiss's Eero Saarinen Visiting Professorship at the Yale School of Architecture, the book envisions a new campus on Roosevelt Island as an island incubator, charged with disrupting the equilibrium of the traditional research university with the real-time volatility of tech start-up companies.

Through an essay and interview, the book highlights the background and recent work of WEISS/MANFREDI and explores their ongoing interest in an expanded territory for architecture. It also traces a genealogy of relevant and visionary academic and corporate research centers, investigating the potential of these models to energize new ecological imperatives, academic agendas, and design strategies, which informed nine student proposals for a new R&D center on Roosevelt Island. Excerpts from notable jurors including Dean Robert A. M. Stern, Thom Mayne, and Hilary Sample are also included. Converging Territories was designed by MGMT design with Nina Rappaport as the managing editor and is published by the Yale School of Architecture.
