Hunter's Point South Waterfront Park Featured in the New York Times and on the Cover of Architectural Record

In a recent New York Times article, Michael Kimmelman describes the unique identity of Hunter's Point South Waterfront Park. Standing atop the park's 30-foot cantilevered overlook as a storm approaches, he writes, "All at once, the skyline evaporated in a silvery, mystic haze. Like an avalanche, a monsoon swept as if out of nowhere across the river. New York never seemed wilder or more magical."

Architectural Record also featured the park on the cover of its August issue with a photo showing pedestrians and joggers enjoying the new pathways along the river's edge at sunset. Reflecting on the transformation of the Hunter's Point neighborhood in Queens, associate editor Alex Klimoski concludes, "By taking advantage of the idiosyncrasies of the site, the designers have created areas to be alone, areas to gather, areas to be near the water or above it–and it is an exceptional model for what could become of New York's remaining industrial waterfront."

WEISS/MANFREDI is thrilled to have taken part in creating this new landmark for New York City, which realizes the full vision of Hunter's Point South Park initiated in Phase I five years ago. Phase II of the park, co-designed by SWA/Balsley and WEISS/MANFREDI, with Arup as the prime consultant and infrastructure designer, has also been featured in Architectural Digest, Metropolis Magazine, and Designboom, and was previewed in May in The New York Times.
