Weiss/Manfredi projects featured among 2023 Progressive Architecture Award winners

On March 16, 2023, ARCHITECT Magazine announced two Weiss/Manfredi projects among the ten unbuilt projects recognized in this year's 70th Annual Progressive Architecture Awards. The La Brea Tar Pits and Museum Master Plan as well as Longwood Gardens’ West Conservatory are highly praised for their innovative and environmentally sensitive design, reimagination of cultural spaces, and the role both projects play in creating more vibrant communities.

The design for Longwood Gardens’ 32,000-square-foot West Conservatory in Kennett Square, PA is featured as a “dramatic recasting of the traditional glass house form” with an emphasis on “exploration, education, culture, and recreation.” The new West Conservatory, currently under construction, is a living, breathing building designed to support horticultural elements that thrive in extreme hot and wet climates, anticipating climate change.

Weiss/Manfredi’s master plan for La Brea Tar Pits and Museum in Los Angeles is recognized for its reimagination of the site’s elements – museum, park, and tar pits – “as part of a continuum with lessons for today and the future” while creating an “integrated series of experiences.” Weiss/Manfredi's design forms a triple Mobius strip that links all previously disconnected and inaccessible elements of the park, connecting its three distinct identities as a place of research and revelation, community, culture, and spectacle to redefine a continuously unfolding experience.

Many thanks to ARCHITECT Magazine and the 2023 Progressive Architecture Awards’ impressive jury with Carrie Byles, FAIA, managing partner, SOM; DK Osseo-Asare, co-founder and principal, Low Design Office; and Lawrence Scarpa, FAIA, co-founder, Brooks + Scarpa.
