Weiss/Manfredi Unveils Competition Entry for Kent State University College of Architecture and Environmental Design

On January 17, WEISS/MANFREDI and three shortlisted teams unveiled their proposals for Kent State University's new College of Architecture and Environmental Design. The Design Loft, sited strategically at the hinge between campus and city, forms a new hub connecting the college with the city of Kent. The 125,000 square-foot building establishes an innovative center for multiple design disciplines and creates a new window onto the creative, artistic, and research-based programs of the College. A continuous studio loft forms the heart of the program. Open studios are configured to maximize flexibility to accommodate a growing program and evolving modes of learning in architecture and design education. As a model for sustainable design for the University and the city, Design Loft illustrates the key role of architecture and design in envisioning a sustainable future.

WEISS/MANFREDI's proposal is in association with Richard L. Bowen Associates Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio. The four finalists were selected from a preliminary list of more than 30 international firms. Kent State is expected to announce the winner in February.
