Longwood Gardens: Cascade Garden and Waterlily Court
Longwood Reimagined includes the preservation and relocation of the historic tropical Cascade Garden—the only garden in North America by the renowned Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx—faithfully reconstructing the design in a new, more prominently located standalone 3,800-square-foot glasshouse designed by WEISS/MANFREDI and recreating the plantings as overseen by Reed Hildebrand.
A historic garden has never been moved as a whole and preserved in this way. This 3,800-square-foot custom-built, stand-alone jewel box designed by WEISS/MANFREDI will allow the plants more room to continue to grow and flourish. The relocated garden, faithfully recreated by Reed Hildebrand, is notable for its richly textured plantings of palms, bromeliads, and philodendrons set amid vertical rock channels, cascading water, and clear pools.
The new arcade frames the historic Waterlily Court, designed by Sir Peter Shepheard in 1989, and connects historic and contemporary additions to the conservatory complex. This refreshed aquatic garden will be redefined as an outdoor room and further strengthened as a central destination, while serving as a gateway to the new West Conservatory and relocated Cascade Garden.
