American Academy in Rome: Mercedes T. Bass Landscape Architects in Residence Fellowship Drawings
In 2019, Marion Weiss and Michael Manfredi were awarded the Mercedes T. Bass Landscape Architects in Residence Fellowship at the American Academy in Rome. The Academy invites distinguished artists and scholars from around the world to come together and reside at the Academy for periods of one to three months. Invitations are extended to senior artists and scholars of international standing in the following disciplines: architecture; design; historic preservation and conservation; landscape architecture; literature; musical composition; visual arts; ancient studies; medieval studies; Renaissance and early modern studies; and modern Italian studies.
During their stay, Weiss and Manfredi served as senior advisers to Rome Prize recipients and to other members of the Academy community, and lead Academy-wide events including concerts, exhibitions, studio visits, lectures, readings, and instructional walks through Rome.
Weiss and Manfredi delivered the keynote lecture, "Water, Landscape, and Architecture," at Villa Aurelia, preceding a conference at the American Academy in Rome on Water and Culture: A View from Rome.
Below is a selection of drawings and sketches by Weiss and Manfredi, made during their residency.
